How much effect does end can choice make??

Recommended Posts

I know alot of you guys run open pipes, but i want to run an endcan. Mainly for less day to day hassle, and for mot time.

Ideally i want to run an under engine stubby. I know a stubby messes with the running of a NA engine. Whats the deal on a turbo'd engine? Same story?

This is my experience from past, when my slabbie  turbo was first set up it ran with 63mm or 2.1/4" system and can, made 103db,s and the back pressure from the can helped the turbo in my application.WHY well small back pressure from Akrapovic can kept the hot side impeller held correctly and stopped small shaft float and with used turbo  at time slight oil weep, A good turbo specialist (Subaru tuner)  rebuilt my turbo and gave me labyrinth seal to aid this issue, also Full open systems I.e no exhaust system no back pressure, is not a good combo, Turbo I,e 4" systems on cars /bikes have shorter life due to this lack of back pressure. Now like I said this helped my issues no more floaty shaft/more back pressure and healthy boost .

I prefer big bore system and quality can makes a great set up better and trackday friendly .

Length or placement isn't that critical with turbo as turbo kills exhaust pulses quite effectively any ways. What matters is restriction and back pressure. And there less is better at least from performance standpoint. So large bore and no sharp turns is the general guidance.

For reference I had an end can with 46mm internal diameter baffle and about 40cm length on roughly 200hp engine. Removing the can made almost 10hp more power and the turbo spooled up earlier.
