k9 front end in slabbie

Àt long  last my old slabbie is being resurrected! !

Picked up a 750m rolling chassis with k9 1000 front end .

750m rear wheel fitted no problem as we all know!

Got the yokes in but top bearings sit proud about 3-4 mm

This is my first attempt at this sort of thing although I am a competent home mechanic

So  question is what now .?

Has anyone done this?  Is there a bearing that will fit or is it a case of a stem swop ?

I've searched up to about page 20 on the forum with not much luck so thought I'd ask for someone's knowledge

Added some pics .  It also came with a BMW s1000rr rear shock fitted will be seeing if that will fit as well.

If it has the marksman top bearing, you need a 3mm washer under bearing cup, as it is only 12mm wide and you need 15mm..... plus front end will be about an inch too low.......

Resolved mine by having some fork extenders made in the good old US of A ;)

Thanks for the advise . Just ordered bearings  from robinsons foundary on offer at the moment.

With regards to the inch I'll loose in ground clearance . I'm assuming that with the change to 17" wheels and shorter forks I'll  loose 2 inches at the front.  And and an inch at the back..Will this be a problem with ground clearance,  I'm  guessing so or else you wouldn't be putting extenders on !!

What are the improvements in the handling after the mods you're experiences would be appreciated

Hi just to confirm its actually 1/2 inch lost since its the measurement from the centre of the wheel ie radius, obviously the big improvement is the tyre choice and rim width using a 17" wheels gives over old style 18" rim but also the profile of the tyre (this may also make the bike lower)

The forks are more complicated they are shorter and this will steepen the front end because the rear is now higher which will usually result in quicker steering, but becomes more unstable in straight line also the offset and thus trail on yokes has tended to change with more modern bikes this will also have an effect

try and get back to the original height and level of the bike with the new suspension and work from there

on my race bike the lost ground clearance was is a problem but I would suspect on the road its not going to be such a significant issue

Hi Scara,

Where / who did the extensions for you, there was a company in Aus that did a nice kit but they seem to have stopped.

Excellent build thread & a great Slabby, credit to you.

Sorry for the delayed reply:

Anyone I spoke to in OZ for custom work immediately directed me to the 'too hard basket'. Dealing with Brits and yanks has always been the better way to go. Always helpful, always frank and honest. Sometimes specialised parts can be sourced out of Germany. If any of these three areas cant do it, they Always forward you to someone that can.

I live in WA and we as a nation suck when it comes to performance or custom / billeted bike parts unless you own a Busa. I am ashamed of the lack of interest in old muscle bikes, even when you call a wrecker (breaker) anything older than 2005 is a non event especially in WA:  Vic and NSW maybe not so bad.

Right now Im looking about for a flat surfaced trigger plate cover to mount an emtes oil scavenger pump I had lying around since I started the build many moons ago. Guess its a waiting game, cant seem to find anything that doesn t have a oil sensor dimple, or scroll work. NRC Racing cover comes close, but no banana, still. has all that sunk scribing..

I gave Stuart the size I wanted 50 mm, told him what forks I was going to fit and why, said I liked the Ohlins design, and that is what he sent me. Fitted perfectly/ Gave me back the lost length in changing forks. From memory OEM 86-88 fork measured length  extended was 770 mm, that was my target.

http://www.smrcomponents.com - name is Stuart. They were $250 US + shipping.

Good luck.

Have you tried extreme creations in Australia?  They too used to supply these. Bought my extenders for a bking front end there.

Hi,

i got a text from a member from here the other day about making yokes they have a drop in them. I might be able to make fork extensions if required but I’m currently working on a design that will be in keeping with 90’s era Suzuki’s but I’m trying to get around a 30-35mm drop in the top yoke whilst maintaining a nice looking profile......it’s tricky but I’m sure doable!

Hi

Anyone able to tell me the bearing size I need to fit the say what now!? k9 1000 into my 1988 1100 slabbie. Or better still the code number from a UK distributor.  I've been told I'll need a spacer to fit under the top bearing cup and the bottom one is the same size on the k9 and slabbie. As I said at the start of the thead it's my first conversion project so sorry for asking dumb newbie questions!

Cheers Blubber, those guys were the ones I was trying to contact. How did the extenders work out ? What I mean is, do the forks function the same, did you have to add more oil to get the right level etc ?

Also, thanks for the info Scara , those guys look they know what they’re about too.

I am no suspension expert but I think they still function OK. The guys at Hyperpro suspension tweaked the settings a bit for comfort. No comments from them as well and they want to sell their service and products.

As its on my daily driver I am not pushing the limits with it.

To me it doesn’t feel weird and doesn't bottom out at a pothole.

Their instructions say use original amount and weight oil. I used Castrol 5w and 527ml per leg.
