  1. Now on the engine side of things. Have been tearing it down to replace the bearing and check tolerances. Something to note about it already is that it's been overbored, and has a set of Wiseco r771 high compression pistons in it (which did get used much before I got it). Everything looks pretty tidy, so I think it'll just be a case of replacing bearings and making sure it's clean.
  2. So yeah it's been a while since this project had been worked on. I did some research and took everyone's advice. And started collecting the parts needed for the build. First up was the front end. Ended up getting a 2008 gsxr1000 set, freshly rebuilt, from a wrecker. Now initially the fit looked good, but we discovered that the original stem was just a bit too small to be pressed into the late model tree. Fortunately I had a smart person helping who CAD'd up a new stem. And another that could machine it for a crate of beer. Next was the rear. I was able to source a BJX wheel and parts (which is I think a late 90s set?). That seems to be able to bolt right in. We are just in the midst of checking spacer widths to make sure it's aligned.
  3. So how late model can you go with the rear? I'm looking at a wrecked 2008 gsxr750 for parts (at least the front end). provided the price is right. Also UPDATE: The frame has come back from the welders, so it's all sorted. As I was cleaning it, I found some cracks under the front end. And also one of the rear engine mounts had snapped off. Next step is dismantling the engine for a bit of a refresher. Something to note, the previous owner did some work on the engine, and it's already oversized with high comp pistons.
  4. Great info guys, thanks really appreciate it. Currently the frame is out at a welder. We discovered some cracks around the front end. But that will be sorted shortly. Now to find some of these parts I'm going to need
  5. Nice, . What rear is that?
  6. thanks. definitely good info to have. I'm not worried about keeping the front forks. as i'd like to replace brakes and pretty much everything up front.
  7. Cool thanks. The bike was more or less in working order. So the suspension is the original set with yokes. I just spent the weekend removing everything and getting 30 years worth of road grime off it.
  8. Hey everyone, Now I've been doing a lot of searching for info just trying to confirm things. And trying to decipher all the different opinions I'm finding. I'm currently rebuilding an 85 GSXR750. Now it's not something I'm putting back to stock as there's too many original parts missing. I'm going to turn it into a bit of a custom muscle racer style thing. It's been completely dismantled and I'm starting to look for parts to replace worn out bits. The first thing to go are the 18" wheels. I want to move to a 17" set. I know that means changing the front end. But how late model can I go with the front end without much modification? And then what swingarms options would I have for the rear? (Since is the original short swingarm version). I've seen a 92 gsxr1100 being parted out. Are those bits useful to me? Thanks
  9. Cheers. I'm central Auckland. May pick your brain at some point if that's cool.
  10. Hey folks. bit of a newbie here. Based in New Zealand. Have just started a project that I will hopefully be using this forum to get info for. I received an 86 GSXR 750 recently as a project bike from a good friend. Needs a fair amount of TLC to get it looking nice, but at least it runs. Here's a quick rundown. No bodywork other than the tank. It's been over-bored and is running high-comp pistons. Currently I am disassembling it, as I'm going to rebuild it from the frame up, replacing things that are needed as I go. Even though it runs, the engine will need to be opened as my friend says we can't trust the tolerances on the last rebuild. There will be other decisions to make. Like do I switch to the 17 inch wheels from the 18's, what bodywork do I want to try and source, etc. It's a long term project, so no rush, and it's my first bike rebuild.
