Patrick's
GSX-R7/11F Project
The
engine
I
bought the engine a year before the chassis. Because I got enthusiastic
by the PB article about Bradley O' Conner's 7/11 I knew I had to
have a GSX1100F engine with lots of reliable low down grunt.
I
fitted the engine into the frame by laying it on it's side (luckily
Ludo's garage has a carpet on the floor) and lowering the frame
over it. This was very exciting as I didn't know beforehand if it
would fit inside the '86 GSX-R750 frame. I was very delighted it
did, but I had to remove the breather cover on top of the valve
cover first. All of the engine's mounting points lined up perfectly
with the frame and I felt on top of the world to see the beautiful
engine resting inside the frame :-)
Because
the standard oil lines of the 750 connect to the bottom of the sump,
but the 1100F has the connections at the front of the engine I swapped
them and had to bend them a little to make them fit. They now run
a bit awkward in front of the cooler, but they will have to do until
I've saved up enough money to buy flexible stainless lines (but
they are INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE!).
The
K&N air filters had enough space around them, which is mostly
a big problem with big engines in small frames. I had tried if the
GSX1100F air box would fit between the beams of the frame, but it
needed too much modification to make it fit.
I
have also tried to fit 38mm slingshot carbs, but that resulted in
three major problems...
First,
the intake channels inside the F's head are 2mm smaller than the
inlet rubbers from the 38's resulting in a 1mm ridge which is bad
for gas flow.
Second, the 38's rubbers made the carbs stand at a steeper angle,
making it impossible to fit air filters between the carbs and the
frame beams.
Third, I discovered that my brand new K&N's wouldn't fit the
bigger 38's.
So I decided to stick with the 34mm's which
are very good for low end power but restrict the engine at high
revs and keep the 38's for maybe some future project if I ever come
across a bargain GSX1100EFE engine.
I'm
using a rubber hose as an engine breather which runs towards the
rearlight into a PiperCross filter. I want to connect a breather
to the oil filler cap, but I haven't quite figured out how I will
do that.
