Suspension Setup Day

14th september 2003
People taking part: Mr.7/11, knarF, stuntgod and Fred.

knarF ans stuntgod arrived early in the morning. After a cup of coffee we got going with the static part of setting up the suspension i.e. adjusting front- and rear preload and finding out which the damping adjuster had what effect.
knarF's shock had to be remover to adjust the preload but we were running out of thread so we had to leave it maxed out.
The only problem we had was that stuntgod's forks weren't really reacting to any damping adjustments along with the preload being too much even with the adjusters fully backed-off which made us suspect there was something seriously wrong with the oil levels or viscosity. Plus the superbike-bars were making it very difficult to get to the preload/rebound adjusters.
After lunch we went to a bumpy local road to setup the damping, but suddenly Fred turned up. I had a quick go on his bike which handles very good but suffers from a bad running engine below 6000rpm.
When we arrived at the test road It didn't last long before I got confused by having to deal with four different settings on two bikes. Luckily knarF's suspension reacted strongly on adjustments so it didn't take long to find a good setup. stuntgod's bike was hampered by it's rigid front fork so we had to settle with making the best out of the back end. When they were both relatively satisfied we went for a ride to see how the bikes behaved with their new setups, but we soon forgot all about that and went on to enjoy the perfect weather and local B-roads. We finished the day with a barbeque.

Setting the preload on knarF's shock
Where it used to reside
Many hands make light work
My mum's not going to be happy when she sees I got my hands all dirty again
Measuring static sag
knarF demonstrating his new cornering technique
Measuring front preload
Hard to reach preload adjuster on stuntgod's bike...
...but at least we didn't have to remove it
Dropping the forks trough the jokes to be able to release the preload
Setting preload in the background
knarF paid somebody better looking to pose with his bike
I'm sorry stuntgod...
these USD forks are F.U.B.A.R.!
This one we prepared earlier
Adjusting front compression
Front rebound adjusters hard to get at
But got to it in the end
Fred paid a short visit on his soon to be wheelie-monster once he gets the bike running properly below 6k
Stuntgod posing his matching leathers but they match someone else's bike... Identity crisis indeed!
Back after the test run
And run they surely did
A variation of arses
Paint it black
Luvely!
One fully satisfied owner, one desillusioned stuntgod
