definative 5.5 inch rim into gsx1100 swinger - also cheapest way?

Recommended Posts

Starting to gather parts for the winter updates but need some advice.

Sorry its more questions and I know this topic has been covered many times in the past but none of the posts I've read to date clearly state the easiest option and by that I mean with the least amount of machining so ideally just using bolt on parts.

So I have  a GSX1100 esd and plan to keep the standard swinging arm to keep it simple and keep cots down, I have a 5.5 inch wheel from an RF900 and am wanting to just go for wider modern rubber.

So my questions are if I stick with a 170 tyre presumably that would make chain clearance fairly easy and I can stil use modern rubber.

Secondly does anyone make offsett sprockets in 520 or 525 pitch as again this would make more room, or am I best sticking to 530 pitch as this seems most common.

Does anyone have a definative list of parts to use to complete the converson without any machining or is some machining going to be absolutely neccessary?

Or is there anyone on here that could make spacers or shorten my current ones for me.

Cheers

Stick with the 170 tire, that's what I run and anything bigger makes things REAL tight!

You will have to have spacers machined. I put the B12 5.5 on my 1000 with the GSX1100 swinger. The spacers were all custom, the bearings as well as the internal spacers from the 1100 wheel were installed in the bandit wheel. The Cush drive from the 1100 is used on the bandit wheel, 6 cushions. Machined off .080 from the Cush drive sprocket face to move the rear 530 Sunstar sprocket in for frame clearance.

I have a 3/8 offset 530 front sprocket, you may have to clean up the welds on the chain run area around the swinger pivot bolt area. No frame notching required.

How many cushions on the RF Cush drive?

Cheers for the info the RF wheel has 6 cushions, probably the same wheel?  BTW shaving the cush drive by .080 is that metric or imperial?

.080", give or take. It was to move the chain in alignment with the front sprocket.

Off the sprocket face of the Cush drive.

I used the under slung caliper and disc from the bandit, so I had to cut the torque arm off the top of the swinger and weld it to the lower side.

Just to make clear, this is a GS1000 that had GSX1100 swinger and wheels. There are some differences in frames so you will have to measure to make sure.

Yo! you can get away with a 180 in the standard swinger but its tight. If you go 520 on your chain and sprockets, use a gs550 sprocket carrier or machine your existing one. Along with an offset front sprocket-or weld one up or have it sorted for you its doable. Just to bare in mind the choice of tyre though. Not all 180's measure true to 180 across tyre manufacturers. I came unstuck when switching manufacturers and had tyre rubbage on chain...Did I mention it can be tight...Alternatively stick with the 160 on 5.5 rim?

Thanks TC, I had similar thoughts and tried to find actual tyre width's for diefferent manufaturesrs to see if I could find a narrow 170 for example but haven't managed to find much, hence going for a 170 that "should" be safe. Also I've not seen many suitible 520 sprockets particularly offset fronts.

You can turn down a 530 to a 520 if memory serves me correct as they are the same pitch. Sprockets are just hardened on the teeth where the chain rollers contact. This I was told by a sprocket manufacturer.

Here is a Bridgestone Battllax 170, 17" on my 1000

Great idea ref turning down the sprockets, didn't think of that.

Think I'll stick with the 170 tyre as I do want it relatively wide and go for the 530 sprockets and will then measue up before I get a chain that way if its tight I can look at turning them down to 520 width. From what I can tell a top quality 520 chain would be okay for a standard GSX ?

You can get 530 chains almost as narrow as some 520 chains so make sure you research before you make the assumption that a 520 is going to be a lot narrower than a 530. I am talking only a few mm wider than a 520.

Thanks for the advice,  are you refering to the type of 530 chain i.e. X ring, O ring and none O ring or variation by different brands? But as you say I need to find a chain specialists where I can measure different ones if possible.
